Academic Year Assignments
The academic year assignment process begins in May and concludes with assignment information being mailed out in early June prior to the beginning of SOAR. UW-Madison has a rolling admissions process, and in order to be fair to all students, we use a random, computerized priority list for room assignments. No matter how early you were admitted to the University, it is possible that you could appear at the beginning or end of the random priority list. Computer processes however can only do so much; our Assignment Office staff value the importance of providing a personal touch to the room assignment process to try to come up with the best possible assignments for students while maintaining the integrity and fairness of the process.

Additional information is available about other academic year assignment processes including:

Learning Community Room Selection
Returning Resident Room Selection
Continuing Student Room Selection

Spring Semester Assignments
Spring semester assignments are made in early January. Since there is a lot of activity with our current residents moving around at the end of the fall semester, we want to make sure that everything is settled before we make assignments for our new spring students. You will be notified of your assignment in plenty of time prior to the University Residence Halls opening for the spring semester. Also, the first bill for spring semester students will not be due until late January.

Summer Assignments
Summer session assignments are usually made 2-3 weeks prior to the start of each summer session. Students are notified of their summer assignments by email which will also include links to important information about moving into the residence halls.
